Slieve Gullion Entrance to Cairn
An Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Slieve Gullion marks the highest point in Co. Armagh and is at the heart of a volcanic landscape. Atop of Slieve Gullion sits a 5000 year old cairn and accordingly to Irish lore, is home to the ancient celtic deity, An Cailleach. Cailleach translated literally means veiled one. She is affectionately called hag or crone and she is wisdom embodied.
An Cailleach is both creator and destroyer Goddess and is said to be responsible for creating the landscape of parts of Ireland and Scotland. Legend says the Cailleach jumped from one hill to the next, dropping stones from her apron to form the magnificent womb-like structures we see today, thousands of years later, at sacred sites such as Slieve Gullion and Loughcrew. The entrance to this chambered cairn is aligned with the sunset of the winter solstice and interestingly or quite astonishingly, this cairn is perfectly aligned with Cairn T in Loughcrew, Co. Meath which is home to a collection of Neolithic passage tombs (or cairns) known as Sliabh na Cailleach / Hill of the Witch.
