Moon Magick
Is it just me or is the moon and it’s mystical energy becoming a hot topic right now? Maybe as we’re forced to slow down, withdraw from our busy lives and turn inward during a lockdown and quarantine period, we are finally quiet enough to observe the ebb and flow of our emotions even when life is seemingly standing still. Often times, I find myself feeling the intensity of the moon at various cycles, whether that’s overly emotional and just needing a good cry, or super charged and unable to rest, even dealing with the rise of old fears or patterns that I thought were gone for good! If the moon is a factor in influencing our emotions and uncovering our hidden inner world, then we have an opportunity to learn more about the moon cycle and how we can harness it’s potent energy for our own growth.
Let’s not be ruled by the energies of the moon but rather use them as an invitation to go within. In this post, I’ve listed some of my favourite moon rituals to help you fully explore your magnificent whole Self; light and shadow.
Moon phases
As the moon orbits Earth, Earth orbits the sun and the moon is propelled through 8 distinct phases; new, waxing crescent, first quarter, waxing gibbous, full, waning gibbous, third quarter, waning crescent.
Each phase of the moon symbolizes our own cycle of growth and development. The sun represents yang - masculine energies of life and the moon represents the yin - feminine energies of life. Yin energy calls for rest, reflection and deep listening to the Self. When in balance it’s nurturing, creative and intuitive. To balance your yin feminine energies make time for self-care, restorative exercise like swimming, yin yoga, walk in nature, meditation, proper sleep and nutrition, journal and listen to your intuition.
The moon is connected to the water and tides so can influence our emotions and even provide insight into our inner world and the subconscious mind. (It’s all making sense now!) The moon uncovers our hidden fears, worries, and even our hopes and dreams. This might seem odd that our hopes and dreams could potentially be hidden in the shadow self, however some people are so limited by core beliefs learned in childhood that they find it almost impossible to allow themselves to dream. For me this was a difficult practice to give myself the space to explore my hopes and highest vision, just to paint the picture. Creative visualization is the first step in reclaiming your dreams. I recommend having a bath and allow yourself to daydream. Ask yourself, if I knew I couldn’t fail what would I do? How do I want to feel?
New Moon
The new moon begins a new lunar cycle. During a new moon, the sun and moon are in conjunction; closest together in the sky and on the same side as Earth.
New moon energy is usually quite high, a time to make new plans, throw yourself into creative projects; a time for action. It brings a refreshing energy and clarity so a great time to set intentions of energy you would like to call forth and experience. You may decide to set an intention to create a new habit or empowering thought pattern, authentic relationship or opportunities that support your highest vision and goals.
It’s important that you focus on the feelings that you wish to call in, rather than attaching to the ‘physical’ manifestation of your intentions, i.e. how your wishes will show up or come about. Once you set your intentions, spend time feeling what it would be like to have your intentions come to fruition. The feeling is the most important part.
Write your intentions down and surrender them to Universe to be healed and manifested for your highest and greatest good. When you let go of how you want your desires to happen, you open up to the magic of the Universe and new ways of receiving!

Full Moon
The full moon is when the moon is fully illuminated; the sun and moon are in opposition (farthest apart in the sky). The full moon represents completion, a time to celebrate your growth, to reflect on the progress you’ve made, what you are ready to leave behind and lessons learned.
The full moon is a time of reflection and reset. It is not a time to make plans or take bold action. You may feel called to introspection and hermit mode, to delve deep into the subconscious through therapy or journaling.
Every full moon is different and depending on it’s position to other planets it will affect each of us differently. So, not every full moon will incredibly deep, emotional and reflective. I always recommend making space in your life for healing, self-care and reflection and a full moon can be a great time for these exercises. I try to listen to what my body needs and follow my intuition, even though it’s not always easy. I can feel guilty when I’m not as productive, even though self-care and healing is such important work.
Honour your feelings and emotions and find support in a trusted friend or family member, call on your angels or team in spirit to be with you and guide you, or work with a therapist, holistic healer or energy practitioner to help you shed energy that is no longer serving you. You will thank yourself afterwards as it won’t be long before you move into a new phase and better able to tackle projects and to do lists!
During the full moon you may feel super creative, receiving lots of ideas, downloads and intuitive hits so it’s a great time to journal and earth all your beautiful ideas.

1. Reiki Healing Attunements

Examples of full moon intentions
I release my pattern of over-eating when I feel rejected.
I release my need to be a people-pleaser in order to feel loved.
I release anxiety and worry about things that I cannot control.
I release any scarcity thinking and lack mentality. I choose abundance.
I release feelings of insecurity and self-doubt. I am ready to claim my power.

2. Smudging
Use sage to smudge (cleanse) your energetic space. To cleanse your room smudge every corner while reciting the following prayer three times:
“I cleanse this space of any negative energy, any energy that is stagnant and no longer serving me. I cleanse this space of any energy that is not aligned with light and love.”
Cleanse your own energy by smudging around your physical body, from under your feet all the way up your body and above your head. Recite the following prayer three times:
“I cleanse my energy body from any energy that is stagnant, negative or no longer serving me. I cleanse my energy from any energy that is not aligned with love and light. Please align my energy to my own I AM presence. I am light and love, I am light and love, I am light and love.”
If you are attuned to Reiki level 1, I recommend drawing the Reiki power symbol in every corner of your space and energy field.
Once you have cleansed your energy, light a new candle and state your intention to release energy that is no longer serving you or call in new energy!
3. Reflection & Intention Setting
Journaling is such a creative and insightful means of self-healing. It gives space for honest reflection so that you can take stock on how far you’ve come, progress made and the lessons, however difficult at the time, that got you where you are today. Give gratitude for the journey. Through reflection you can assess what is no longer serving you by identifying fears, blocks and any limiting beliefs that are hindering your growth. It also allows you to discover more empowering energies that you’re ready to call in.
When we have the courage to label our fears, worries and insecurities we give them space to be seen and heard and we honour parts of ourselves that may have been denied in the past.
Reflect on your past and any themes or issues that keep arising; there’s a message within the pain. Try not to attach to intense emotions that arise, allow them to be released with compassion - sometimes the best healing needed is a good aul fashioned cry! Just remember you are not your emotions, you are the observer. Usually these intense moments arise again and again so that we can finally heal them. See these moments as an opportunity to transform limiting beliefs or thought patterns - anything that is holding you back, so that you can stand in your power.
Journal prompts:
What limiting beliefs, habit or thought patterns are holding me back, or keeping me small?
What would I do if I didn’t have this belief/thought pattern?
How do I speak to myself?
How do I care for my full Self; mind, body, spirit?
What are some new modalities I could introduce into my self care practice?
What relationship(s) are not serving my highest good and needs to be released?
What areas in my life feels stagnant, negative or inauthentic?
What empowering beliefs am I ready to embody?
If I knew I couldn’t fail, what would I create? What would I do?
What traits and qualities do I value and embody, what am I excited to bring into relationship?
How do I want to feel; in my work, with myself, in my relationships?
It’s important to call upon the Divine, your higher self and your team in spirit to support you. Ask for assistance to see the bigger picture and to remember just how amazing and beautiful you are. Be kind to yourself.
4. Healing Bath
Relax into an Epsom salt bath and add in some aromatherapy or essential oils and even healing crystals.
New Moon: speak your intentions into the bath to soak in the positive vibrations you want to call forth.
Full Moon: when you are are almost finished with your bath, speak your intention(s) into the bath and intend that the energy be drained into the earth where it is transmuted into positive energy for the Universe.
Exit your bath feeling lighter and excited for your changes that are already in motion!
Crystals are a fun addition to your healing bath as water helps to enhance the crystal’s high vibrations and bring you back to yourSelf. You don’t need a certain number of crystals, you can bring as many as you like or just work with one. Either line them up along your bath or along your body resting on each chakra center. Below are some of my favourite crystals for healing:
Rose Quartz ~ is a pink stone that promotes self-love and self-worth.
Jasper ~ the ‘supreme nurturer’ promotes confidence and supporting you to show up as your true self
Tiger’s Eye ~ promotes energy and motivation. Assists in expelling fear, anxiety and self-doubt while bringing harmony, clarity and balance.
Amethyst ~ widely used for protection and healing. It’s colour is purple and is associated with the crown chakra; our connection with our highest self and spirituality.
Malachite ~ known as the ‘stone of transformation’, Malachite promotes deep healing, balance, abundance and manifestation! This is a green stone associated with the heart chakra and promotes heart healing.
I also recommend choosing whatever crystal you are feeling drawn to ~ trust your intuition.
