The Winter Solstice is a powerful and auspicious turning point of the year, an astronomical event honoured across cultures and traditions. In Ireland, it is one of the major fire festivals of the Celtic Wheel, a moment when we return to the heartbeat of the land and align ourselves with the wisdom of nature.
On December 21st, the sun appears to pause in the sky, resting at its lowest point to create the longest night of the year, before beginning its slow ascent back toward the northern hemisphere. This sacred pause invites us into stillness, inner reflection, release, and renewal. The Winter Solstice offers a profound opportunity to witness the cycle of death and rebirth unfolding in the natural world and within ourselves.
Newgrange
Newgrange, located in Co. Meath, is a Neolithic passage tomb dating back to around 3200 BC, making it older than Stonehenge and the Great Pyramids of Giza. This ancient monument was carefully constructed with precise astronomical knowledge, as its passage and inner chamber are perfectly aligned with the rising sun of the Winter Solstice.
On the morning of the solstice, a narrow beam of sunlight enters through the roofbox, travels the length of the passage, and illuminates the chamber within. This awe-inspiring display is not just a spectacular visual phenomenon, it is a profound symbol of the Return of Light, marking the rebirth of the sun after the longest night of the year. Newgrange is revered as a place of ritual, reflection, and renewal, where the cycle of darkness and light, death and rebirth is celebrated and the energy of transformation is deeply felt.

An Cailleach, Goddess of Winter
In this workshop, we will collaborate with the sacred land of Ireland, calling upon the powerful energies of Newgrange and An Cailleach, an ancient Celtic deity and guardian of the dark half of the year. Since Samhain, we have been journeying through this darker season ruled by An Cailleach, who guides us into the womb of winter. She invites you to shed what no longer serves, to surrender old stories, and to dream a new dream - one that is aligned with your authentic Self.
An Cailleach’s presence is one of unconditional love and she reminds us that there can be no darkness without light - that the light will return again and you will emerge renewed; lighter, brighter, and filled with the clarity, purpose, and inner power you need for the path ahead.
In aid of Focus Ireland
This Winter Solstice workshop is offered in aid of Focus Ireland, with 100% of proceeds donated directly to the charity. Focus Ireland, founded by Sr Stan, works to support individuals and families experiencing or at risk of homelessness across Ireland. Their mission is that everyone has the right to a safe place to call home, is deeply aligned with the values of compassion, dignity, and empowerment that guide my work.
I have had the honour of volunteering at The Sanctuary in Dublin, also founded by Sr Stan, and her vision of heartfelt service is close to my heart. Offering this workshop in support of Focus Ireland feels like a natural extension of that spirit.
In a season that celebrates the return of light, this is an opportunity for us to come together in community and extend that light outward. Empowerment grows when we empower others, and contributing to Focus Ireland means directly supporting those who need it most.
