About Dowth
Dowth is the oldest monument that makes up Brú na Bóinne, an impressive Neolithic complex constructed in circa 3200 BC - making it older than the pyramids of Giza! Unlike its neighbours Knowth and Newgrange, Dowth is not part of the official Brú na Bóinne tour which can only be accessed via the visitor centre. Dowth is open to the public but is still often overlooked. The place name ‘Dowth’ comes from an old Irish word ‘Dubad’ meaning darkness, which is fitting, as so much of this ancient site remains a mystery, and that, is the medicine of Dowth.
‘Place of Darkness’
According to the creation story of Dowth, the King at the time summoned all the men in Ireland to build a monument that would take his soul to the Otherworld. The men offered one days work and so the King’s sister, a powerful druidess, cast a spell on the sky to stop the sun and extend daylight. Unfortunately the King took a ‘liking’ to his sister and committed incest. As a result, the spell was broken and the land fell into complete darkness. Based on this legend and the infamous kerbstone named by Martin Brennan as ‘The Stone the Seven Suns’ which contains carvings that may depict an eclipse and may explain why at some point the land was in sudden and complete darkness. This story may highlight Dowth’s incredible alignment with the setting sun on Winter Solstice where a beam of sunlight pierces the south passage way travelling to the back chamber and illuminating an orthostat.
Energy of Dowth
By now, you know I’m more interested in the energetic significance and magnificance of these sacred sites that decorate the Irish landscape than anything else, so, let us explore the healing power of Dowth!
Deep beneath the land of Dowth lies a bright yellow light, which continues to swirl and shine even when it lives very much in the shadows of it’s neighbours, Knowth and Newgrange.
Dowth, similar to Newgrange is a yang energy rooted in mother earth; the ultimate Divine feminine. The yellow vortex works with our solar plexus, aka our power centre and a place where our authencity, shines brightly. And yet, not everyone will notice our Light. Dowth reminds us that even when you feel overlooked, unseen or invisible, your Light is still there, shining brightly. A reminder that not everyone is privy to our energy and some may even see our light as casting a shadow over theirs. But this cannot be so, this is ego. So we must trust that when we’re feeling hidden in the shadows, we are actually protected from those who are simply not ‘our people’. We must stand firmly in our power and continue to shine our Light and be our most authentic self anyway, trusting that ‘our people’, ‘our soul tribe’, will find us.
Each time I sit within the earthy bowl of Dowth I feel safe, yet exposed, as the brightest and most vulnerable parts of me are witnessed. In this session, we will connect to the healing energies of Dowth as it shines a light on what is hiding in the shadows; the parts we deem ‘good’ and the parts we deem ‘bad’. Dowth will help us to integrate pieces left in the dark so we can feel a sense of wholeness and empowerment as we build our self esteem and sense of Self.
Dowth reminds us that we are not something to be figured out, no matter how hard we try! Trying to predict the future or control how people see us is just a tactic to stay safe, but it is only an illusion. Dowth offers us a new way - instead of trying to control how people see us or guess the path ahead, Dowth helps us to let go of worrying how people perceive us or how we wish they would, and instead, invites us to embrace the great mystery of life by grounding more deeply in the truth of who we are.
