About

Tobernalt well is an ancient site located in Co. Sligo and one that continues to attract pilgrims from all over the world. The energy of Tobernalt well is potent! A portal of unconditional love, this sacred site holds the healing energy of the Mother, and in particular, Mother Mary. In this class, we’ll journey in meditation to Tobernalt well for a sacred collaboration with Mother Mary to heal any wounding around the Mother and to honour this sacred archetype. This meditation will support you in the following ways:

  • Helping you to reconnect with the energy of the mother - feels especially potent if your mother has passed

  • Healing the mother wound (formed in childhood)

  • Offer healing to your maternal lineage

  • Release fears, doubts, insecurities, etc. you hold as a mother

  • Heal grief, heartbreak or even confusion around not being a mother (whether a choice or not)

My Experience

When I visited Tobernalt well, like all first meetings with sacred sites, I had no expectations, no requests, just grateful to be there and practice allyship. From the moment I stepped out of the car I could feel the potency of this ancient site and my heart was already healing before I even reached the well. I walked around the well leaving offerings, and making sure not to pollute the well. Although there are signs asking visitors not to throw coins into the well, the protection here also feels innate! Pretty sure water nymphs were dancing all around me blessing this natural spring.

I felt a strong call to sit by the banks of the well, where the water flowed to meet the river and I dipped my feet. As always when I visit a sacred well, the invitation is to ‘leave behind everything you think you know’ in exchange for truth. No matter how many times I show up, letting go never feels easy. Sitting with the consciousness of the well and her guardians, brought my own desires and fears around motherhood to the surface. Feelings I had supressed and pushed away as they felt too big to face alone all hurried to meet me and n this safe space, faced with all I had pushed away, everything suddenly made sense. I sat there in meditation for what felt like 10 minutes but turned out to be almost an hour! That’s the thing about these thin places - time is not the same.

What I didn’t expect was the gift I received that day. My own inner Mother Archetype was activated. As I healed the wounds from the past including trauma within my maternal lineage, I was able to access my inner Mother through a lens of empowerment rather than through a lens of trauma. The Mother was always within me, along with the Maiden and the Crone but because I have no biological children, I felt the grief of not being called Mother, and so I shut it down completely.

The Truth is, the Mother is within all of us. Join me in meditation for a sacred journey toTobernalt Holy Well and reconnect with the healing energy of the Mother.

Wells in Ireland

Before wells were christianised, they were a part of pagan culture and considered sacred portals to the Otherworld, offering mystery and healing, inspiration and magical gifts or blessings. There are over 3000 wells in Ireland, but unfortunately not all are as well-maintained as Tobernalt Holy Well. When we step onto sacred ground, it’s important to show gratitude to all of the guardians who care for the site and even become an ally yourself! Practice reciprocity, give thanks and acknowledge the land and her guardians. Ask yourself, what would I do if I were to walk on sacred land? Would you leave your shoes by the gate? Would you pause in stillness and prayer? Would you introduce yourself to the land and ask, how can I help? There are fewer and fewer sacred places we have access to in our daily modern lives, so when you visit somewhere like Tobernalt Well, remember that the energy feels so potent, thousands of years later, because of the beings and the people who came before you - the ones who protect this site purely by treating it as sacred.
